Bermuda High School For Girls (BHS)
BHS is a girls-only school and was established in 1894 in line with Cheltenham Ladies College of the UK. The school has been following the UK education system while also being sensitive to the advancement in international education.
In Early Years Program (EYP), it combines International Early Years Curriculum and the UK Early Years Foundation Stage. Following EYP, students move on to Year-1.
Year 1-6 is Primary School, Year 7-11 is Secondary School. The school also offers International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program in Year-12 and Year-13 which is co-educational.
The stated objective of Bermuda High School is to provide such quality education and flexibility so that the students passing out of BHS are fully ready to take up further education in schools or colleges both in Bermuda and abroad including in US, Canada and the UK.
The school initially started as a government run public school. In 1963 it was decided to run it independent of the government and was converted into a private school. Since then, BHS has been a premier private school in Bermuda.
The education structure of BHS includes
- A primary school, years 1-6;
- A middle school, years 7,8 and 9;
- IGCSE/GCSE, years 10 and 11; and
- IB (International Baccalaureate Diploma), years IB1 and IB2.
Graduation, i.e. the completion of the school certificate from BHS requires getting a passing average on the IGCSE/GCSE’s.
The IB program is available for both BHS and non-BHS students (and for both boys and girls). A student had secured 99.6% score becoming one of the top 100 students in the world.
The Butterfield Wing of the school has science and computer labs as well as the secondary library, music rooms, classrooms and a dance room.
Another great facility in the campus is the Jessie Vesey Sports Center. This multi-purpose sports facility houses a gym, 2 full size basketball courts, badminton, volleyball, netball, tennis and climbing wall. The building also has a dance room for aerobics and a fitness, as well as a weights area.
